Ray R. Ortiz
Ray R. Ortiz was born in Del Rio, Texas. His father served 30 years in the United States Navy and retired in Corpus Christi, Texas, which is where Ray attended high school. After high school, he attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management in 1986. He attended the University of Texas School of Law, and graduated in 1988. He then worked as the Acting/Senior City Attorney for the City of Victoria for four years before joining Jones, Andrews & Ortiz, P.C. in 1993. He remained with Jones, Andrews & Ortiz, P.C. until he formed Ortiz & Batis, P.C. in 2017, now Ortiz & Law, P.C. Mr. Ortiz has handled primarily first and third party insurance cases as well as municipal/governmental matters for the past 27 years.
He has tried more than 30 cases to a jury verdict in both Federal and State Courts. He has tried lawsuits involving insurance bad faith, products liability, premises liability, governmental liability, personal injury and labor & employment. He has also taken hundreds of Examinations Under Oath on behalf of insurance carriers. Subsequent to Hurricane Katrina, Mr. Ortiz handled several matters in Louisiana on behalf of insurance carriers. During his career, he has served as the City Attorney for the Texas cities of Converse, Garden Ridge, Castroville, Selma, Shavano Park and Victoria.
Since 2005, Mr. Ortiz has been rated as an AV Preeminent Lawyer by Martindale-Hubbell. Mr. Ortiz is a member of the Texas Association of Defense Counsel, the Defense Research Institute, the Claims & Litigation Management Alliance, the Texas City Attorneys Association, and the San Antonio Bar Association. Mr. Ortiz is licensed in state court in Texas and Oklahoma. He is admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Western and Southern Districts of Texas as well as the Western District of Oklahoma. He is also licensed to practice in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
